RESEARCH

The Retail Institute is using its networks and expertise to develop a deeper understanding of the unique characteristics of the retail, wholesale and distribution sectors. The information from this research is vital for planning the development of a skilled workforce that will contribute to increased productivity and enable the industry to anticipate and adjust to change and innovation.

The Retail Institute serves the industry by providing leadership on matters relating to skills and training needs.  Research is an important part of this leadership role and, except for the valuable work done by the New Zealand Retailers Association into the economic state of the retail industry and the distribution of retail outlets, it is an area that has traditionally been neglected.

Our research contributes to:

  • Understanding developments in the national labour market
  • Understanding the characteristics of the industry workforce
  • Establishing the training needs of employers and employees
  • Identifying skill gaps, anticipating future skill needs and planning strategies to address these needs
  • Evaluating our own organisation's performance and the value of Retail Institute  programmes for employers and employees

We value the cooperation and participation of our industry partners in our research projects. We aim to disseminate the research results widely to benefit all our stakeholders.
