INFORMATION FOR SCHOOLS

A challenge for many young people is bridging the gap between school and work. Schools programmes can help. The Retail Institute is offering five programmes to schools in 2012.

The Customer Service Award

This certificate made up of a set menu (25 credits) covering the essentials in customer service identified by the industry as essential for the retail workplace:

  • Communication skills
  • Personal presentation
  • Product knowledge
  • Team work

Retail Insights - NEW

Retail Insights has been created especially for school students. It is a great next step for students who have completed the Customer Service Award. It is made up of a set menu (18 credits) covering:

  • Advanced customer service techniques
  • Developing product expertise
  • Displaying and presenting products
  • Working with money

Selling Skills

This module is from the National Certificate in Retail (Level 2).  It is made up of a set menu (13 credits) covering:

  • The essentials in customers buying motives
  • Selling
  • Creating displays
  • Presenting goods for sale

Managing Yourself

This module is from the Retail Modern Apprenticeship. Students will develop skills and techniques that will help them in their job and personal life, now and in the future. Managing Yourself is made up of a set menu (7 credits) covering: 

  • Managing your own learning
  • Solving problems
  • Coping with change  

Working in Distribution - NEW

This certificate gives students an excellent understanding of what working in distribution requires. It is made up of a set menu (23 credits) covering:

  • The distribution network
  • Health and safety
  • Managing inward goods
  • Stock control
  • Loss prevention
  • Picking, packing and dispatching.

 

Students must be in a retail work placement for at least 12 days over a period of weeks to gain the required verifications and experience to successfully complete these programmes. Once completed, students will have NCEA compatible units and a certificate endorsed by the Retail Institute for their portfolio or CV.
