Finalists Announced for Top Shop Retail Modern Apprentice of the Year

29 August 2008

The finalists for the Top Shop Retail Modern Apprentice of the Year have been selected and the mystery shopping process is well underway to determine the winners.

The finalists were chosen because of their dedication to the industry and come from a variety of retail stores, fashion wear to hardware and stationery to army supplies.  They are all committed retailers focussed on upskilling themselves to be the future managers and supervisors of their stores.

The Top Shop Retail Modern Apprentice of the Year award is a new category at the Top Shop awards and is sponsored by the Retail Institute. The award is unique because it recognises individuals as opposed to retail stores.

Round one of the event has been completed and there are now 18 finalists nationwide, regional winners will be announced at the Top Shop events being held in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, and Christchurch. The finalists from each of these events will attend the final Top Shop, where the overall winner will be announced.

The regional winning apprentices will receive the opportunity to complete the National Certificate in Retail Level 4, which is a retail management level certificate. The overall winner will also receive an Outward Bound learning experience.

The Retail Modern Apprenticeship programme

The Retail Modern Apprenticeship programme is developed by Retail Institute and supported by the government.  It is a work-based training programme for young ambitious staff that is designed to help businesses develop new or existing staff.

Having an apprentice is a good way for businesses to succession plan, retain staff, and put formal training systems into their workplace. The apprentice gains skills, confidence, knowledge and qualifications.
