Resources for Loss Prevention Training

The Retail Institute has been working with industry to develop training resources, unit standards and qualifications in Loss Prevention. This is an area in where there is an urgent need for resources that can assist employee development from shop floor to senior management levels.

The following seven draft unit standards have been submitted to NZQA for their final compliance check with the full support of all members of the industry advisory group. These draft unit standards cover the following loss prevention skills in retail and distribution environments:

  1. Explain the legal definitions and consequences of theft & fraud (24996)
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of theft and fraud (24997)
  3. Identify monitor and deter suspicious customer behaviour (24998)
  4. Detect and reduce staff theft and fraud (24999)
  5. Demonstrate knowledge of retail security systems (25000)
  6. Operate & maintain security systems (25001)
  7. Train staff in loss prevention (25002)

There are two main areas of loss - malicious and process loss. The above draft unit standards are most relevant to malicious loss. The Retail Institute is now developing training resources in both areas and unit standards in process loss prevention.
